UK Parliamentary Rugby League Group toast RLWC2013 kick-off in parliament
During Business Questions today (October 24) in the House of Commons, RLWC2013 received a final mention before the tournament kicks off on Saturday October 26 at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
In what will be the last of a series of Parliamentary Questions asked by Members of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, highlighted the importance of the Rugby League World Cup to the UK, not least as the first major sporting event in the country since London 2012, and that it starts on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium with Wales against Italy and England against Australia.
Mulholland’s question sought assurance from the Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake, that the Government remains fully behind the tournament and that as a London MP he might like to attend the Big Hit semi-final double header at Wembley Stadium.
Now in its 25th year, the Parliamentary Rugby League Group comprises circa 70 Members of both Houses of Parliament as well as non-Parliamentary Associate Members. It acts to support the sport of rugby league football and promote the game in Westminster and Whitehall and has been working with RLWC2013 organisers to promote the tournament since the end of the 2012 Olympic Games.
As well as Parliamentary Questions on the tournament to Ministers in different Government departments, the Group has been active behind the scenes raising matters with officials. In October 2012 RLWC2013 organisers spoke to the Group and outlined the plans and progress to date and earlier this year the Group hosted a World Cup reception to showcase what has already been recognised as the best world cup ever. After speaking on the floor of the House, Mulholland said: “RLWC2013 is the first major international sporting tournament in this country since London 2012 and should be the best Rugby League World Cup ever.
“The Parliamentary Rugby League Group has worked hard alongside the RLWC2013 organisers to promote the tournament with MPs, Ministers and officials with it being is a very important tournament for the UK. We have raised RLWC2013 in both Houses of Parliament, held a very well attended reception and we have written to all MPs with a RLWC2013 fixture list.
“The Parliamentary Rugby League Group is very excited about RLWC2013 and looking forward to this weekend’s opening ceremony and the feast of international rugby league that we have in the UK, Ireland and France over the coming weeks.
“We wish all fourteen nations taking part the best of luck and best wishes and hope they, the RLWC2013 team and most of all sports fans have a fantastic Rugby League World Cup!”
