Rugby League World Cup 2013 Celebration in Parliament
With just over 50 days to the opening ceremony of the Rugby League World Cup 2013, Members of Parliament will gather tomorrow, Tuesday 3 September, to celebrate the tournament and discuss the home nations’ chances of success.
The RLWC2013 event will see MPs welcome legends and figures from the game, including World Cup ambassador Martin Offiah MBE and England Head Coach Steve McNamara.
The event will be hosted by Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, who will welcome guests and Parliamentary colleagues. He said “The 2013 Rugby League World Cup is the first major international sports tournament to take place in the UK since London 2012 and is another great opportunity for people to enjoy top class sport here.
“It is hugely exciting to see RLWC2013 being played up and down the country, including of course the opening ceremony at the Millennium Stadium in Wales, the “Big Hit” double header semi-finals at Wembley and the final at OId Trafford; as well as some games in places experiencing international rugby league for the first time.
“With the importance of RWLC2013 and with England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all competing, it is fitting that there is a reception in the Houses of Parliament to tell MPs and peers more about the tournament and I hope many will attend games and encourage their constituents to do the same.
“With the first game now under months away, it is great to be promoting RLWC213 in Westminster as part of the build-up and on behalf of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group I would like to wish all competing nations the very best for the tournament and here’s to it being the best rugby league world cup there has been”.
Tournament Director Nigel Wood added “it’s wonderful to see so many Members of Parliament joining us tomorrow to celebrate and promote the World Cup. Many MPs have already been incredibly supportive of what we are trying to achieve at a national level as well as in their constituency’s hosting of matches or team base camps.
“With their support and record-breaking numbers of volunteers from constituencies all over Britain, we are on course to make this the biggest and best World Cup ever.”
