Parliamentary Rugby League Group presents Jamie Peacock with Geoff Lofthouse Award
On Friday night (1 April 2016), Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman and Leeds Rhinos’ MP, Greg Mulholland, presented Jamie Peacock with the Group’s Geoff Lofthouse Award.
The award, named after one of the late founders and long-standing Chairman of the Group, is presented every year to an individual who has provided long-term and sustained support to rugby league at a high level.
Peacock, who retired from the game at the end of the 2015 season, started his professional career at Bradford Bulls, before moving to Leeds Rhinos in 2006. Over the course of an illustrious career spanning 17 years Peacock won every domestic honour on offer, including twelve Super League Championships and four Challenge Cups. A winner of the Man of Steel Award in 2003, he went on to be named in the Super League Dream Team a record eleven times. He also captained the Great Britain and England national teams between 2005 and 2012, and won 47 caps for his country.
Whilst now Football Manager at Hull KR, the presentation was made back at Peacock’s hometown club, as the Rhinos welcomed the Robins to Headingley on Friday evening. Hull KR ran out 30-10 winners.
After making the presentation on the pitch at half time, Leeds North West MP Mulholland said “Jamie was a great ambassador for the game of rugby league throughout his illustrious career. Few players performed with such consistency for so long, both at club and international level, and I will miss watching him play at Headingley. I am delighted that Jamie will continue to support the game in his off-field role, and am certain he will be a passionate representative for rugby league for many years to come.”
Also commenting on the award was Hull KR’s MP, Karl Turner, who added “I am thrilled that the Parliamentary Rugby League Group has been able to recognise the contribution that Jamie made to the sport over the course of his career. I am pleased that he has taken on an off-field role at Hull KR, and I am sure that he will continue to make a significant contribution to our game.”
