Parliamentary Rugby League Group looks forward to Challenge Cup draw on Today programme
Members of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group are very pleased with the news that the Challenge Cup sixth round draw will take place live on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme tomorrow (Thursday 21 April), from 8.30am.
Longstanding presenter John Humphrys will conduct the draw with four-time Challenge Cup winner Martin Offiah live on air to an audience of around three million listeners.
The news follows a meeting in Parliament in January, at which the Group welcomed senior BBC representatives to discuss issues around coverage of rugby league, or lack of it, on some BBC News programmes, including complaints about coverage on the Today programme around the England v New Zealand series.
However, the Group noted and was pleased with the Today programme’s coverage at the start of the 2016 Super League season, which included an interview with Leeds Rhinos player Jamie Jones-Buchanan.
Group Chairman and Leeds North West MP, Greg Mulholland, welcomed the announcement, saying “The Parliamentary Rugby League Group is delighted that the Today programme is to host the sixth round draw of the Challenge Cup, this is a great initiative and I hope rugby league fans will tune in to hear Martin Offiah and John Humphrys draw out the teams.
“The BBC Rugby League team at BBC Sport do a great job covering the game and we are really pleased that Radio 4’s flagship news programme is covering rugby league in this way”.
