Parliament wishes teams well for Super League Grand Finals
Members of Parliament have wished all teams well ahead of the men’s and women’s Super League Grand Finals, taking place on Saturday 13 October.
A motion has been tabled in the House of Commons congratulating those clubs taking part for reaching the Grand Finals. It also recognises efforts to develop the women’s Super League in particular, and “hopes that both games will inspire more people to participate in one of the many formats of rugby league on offer across the United Kingdom.”
The men’s final at Old Trafford features Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors, after the two clubs overcame St Helens and Castleford Tigers respectively in their semi-final matches. The women’s Super League Grand Final takes place at the Manchester Regional Arena earlier in the day, with Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors facing off after defeating Castleford and St Helens respectively.
Tabling the motion was Member of Parliament for Warrington South, Faisal Rashid MP, who said “I congratulate those sides who have reached the men’s and women’s Super League Grand Finals this weekend.
“Saturday will be the showpiece event of the Super League season, and I have no doubt that both games will be fantastic adverts for rugby league.”
Supporting the motion was Member of Parliament for Makerfield and All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group Vice-Chair, Yvonne Fovargue MP. She added “it is fantastic that for a second year in a row, the men’s and women’s Super League Grand Finals will be played on the same day.”
“I wish all teams well, and look forward to two thrilling games of rugby league.”
All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chair and Member of Parliament for Bradford South, Judith Cummins MP, said “the women’s Super League is a great concept, and has helped the profile of the women’s game grow hugely over the past two years.
“We are already seeing more women and girls playing rugby league, and I hope that two fantastic games on Saturday will encourage even more people to participate in our game.”
