Parliament welcomes World Club Series wins
A motion has been tabled in the House of Commons congratulating Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves on their World Club Series victories.
The motion recognises that “these are the first victories for northern hemisphere sides in the expanded World Club Series format” and further notes that Wigan’s success makes them the first northern hemisphere World Club Champions since 2012. It also “congratulates Wigan Warriors in particular for their success in becoming World Club Champions for a record fourth time.”
The Warriors defeated NRL Champions Cronulla Sharks 22-6 to become World Club Champions whilst in the other World Club Series match Warrington ran out 27-18 victors.
The motion was tabled by Member of Parliament for Wigan, Lisa Nandy MP, who praised Wigan’s victory. She said “I am delighted that Wigan were able to defeat Cronulla to become World Club Champions for a record fourth time. It was a clinical performance by the Wigan team, and a great result for the town and for rugby league in the UK.”
Wigan Warriors fan and Member of Parliament for Makerfield, Yvonne Fovargue MP, added “these were two brilliant performances by Wigan and Warrington against strong southern hemisphere opposition. Wigan’s victory makes them the first northern hemisphere World Club Champions since 2012, and puts the club in a great place for the 2017 Super League season.”
Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group and Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland MP, also signed the motion. He said “this year’s World Club Series provided fantastic entertainment, and Members of the Group are delighted with the wins for Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves. After five years of dominance by the NRL, these victories have restored pride to the Super League, and I look forward to another enthralling season of domestic rugby league.”
