Parliament welcomes historic Toronto Wolfpack fixture
A motion has been tabled in the House of Commons welcoming the historic rugby league match taking place between London Skolars and Toronto Wolfpack on Saturday 4 March.
Toronto are the first transatlantic rugby league team, and have entered League 1, the third tier of rugby league in the UK. The game at Skolars’ New River Stadium will be their first league fixture.
The motion “notes that this will be the first league fixture for Canadian club Toronto Wolfpack” and “welcomes the ambition shown by founder Eric Perez and all involved with the Toronto Club”.
It also praises London Skolars’ role in ensuring that the day provides a full celebration of rugby league, by involving twenty London and South East junior sides, and Masters rugby league.
The motion was tabled by Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman and Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland MP. He said “Toronto Wolfpack’s addition to the UK’s third tier competition is an exciting first for British sport and for rugby league. Whilst Toronto have already played a number of friendly matches and defeated Siddal in the third round of the Challenge Cup last weekend, this will be their first league fixture, and it is fitting that it is being held in London. I wish both teams well for the game, and look forward to following Toronto’s efforts to develop the sport across North America.”
Member of Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green and Skolars fan, Catherine West MP, said “I’m delighted that London Skolars are able to welcome Toronto Wolfpack for their first League 1 fixture, and wish the Toronto team all the best for their inaugural season. London Skolars do a lot of excellent work in my constituency, and I am particularly pleased that so many young players will be able to take part on the day. I’m looking forward to a great event, but hoping that Skolars will emerge victorious.”
