Members of the Group work in Parliament and Whitehall to promote the game and challenge issues rugby league faces. The Group meets monthly in the Palace of Westminster and is joined by a growing number of individuals and organisations who provide thoughts and insight into the game.
On welcoming the clubs to their first Group meeting on Tuesday 11th June, Group Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, said “the Parliamentary Rugby League Group very much welcomes supporters of our game in the same way clubs up and down the country need rugby league fans. We need to know how they feel and what challenges they are facing. We regularly support clubs with specific issues, but to have clubs join provides a constant direct and vital link. We very much welcome Bradford, Oxford and Brentwood to the Group.
Former sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South and Bulls’ Chairman said “I’ve been involved in rugby league, the Parliamentary Group and Bradford Bulls for a long time. I know first-hand the challenges faced by our sport at the highest level. The Parliamentary Group was tremendous in its support for the Bulls, with Members putting aside any club allegiance to help such an historic club. But the Group does so much more behind the scenes and I believe it is important that we do what we can to help them deliver their work and support our game.”
Tony Colquitt, CEO of Oxford Rugby League, said “Oxford Rugby League is no different to any other rugby league or other professional sports club. We are all working to develop our club, our players, and our fan base. The Parliamentary Group has been instrumental in so many of the important decisions that have affected our sport and it was therefore a straightforward decision for Oxford RL to join the Group and to have input and show support for the work Members of Parliament in the Group.”
Chairman of Brentwood Rugby League FC Carl Horsman said “The club are extremely proud to become an associate member of such a prestigious group. We certainly welcome the opportunity to work with the Parliamentary Group in the future and also engage with the wider Rugby League family.”
